Many may have overlooked the significance of the Manawatū region in the broader development of women’s rugby in New Zealand, and indeed internationally. Dr Lydia Furse traces a number of local links to the herstory of national women’s rugby, outlining reactions to games in the 1920s before considering the interprovincial game in 1980, and finally celebrating some local sports stars who have made a huge impact on the world stage as part of the Black Ferns.
