Episode Information
We started this three part series in 1963 with the Beatles first album Please Please Me and over the next four years the music has gone through a radical evolution and in the process influencing the entirety of popular music but if anyone thought the Beatles might have gone as far as they could go, 1967 was about to prove them very wrong. Released in May of that year Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band would not only be the biggest selling and most influential album of the 1960s, almost 60 years later that influence still resonates. The Songwriters Ep 26 - The World of Dolly Parton – 27-08-2024( 0:56:32)
Episode Information
As I was considering the episode I realised that beyond the hits and some sketchy PR details, I actually knew very little about one the most successful female songwriters of the modern era of popular music. With that in mind, this episode is as much about the world that shaped Dolly Parton as it is about the music that sold 100 million records and turned her into a pop culture icon. And then there’s Dolly Parton the secular saint. In 2008 Tom Waits interviewed himself – it started like this: I must admit, before meeting Tom, I had heard so many rumours and so much gossip that I was afraid. Frankly, his gambling debts, his animal magnetism, coupled with his disregard for the feelings of others... His elaborate gun collection, his mad shopping sprees, the facelifts, the ski trips, the drug busts and the hundreds of rooms in his home. The tax shelters, the public urination... I was nervous to meet the real man himself but I found him to be gentle, intelligent, open, bright, helpful, humorous, brave, audacious, loquacious, clean, and reverent.
