Today Oliver talks to Ana Salamasina and Tiana Collins about Blind Low Vision NZ and Aka Ora.
Ana Salamasina – a current member / client of BLVNZ and member of Aka Ora – Pasifika and Māori members support group was. In
2003 she was diagnosed with Keratoconus which is an eye condition that affects the cornea (the clear tissue covering the front of the eye).
Ana has a cornea graph, cataracts, laser, and injections to the eye as treatment for Keratoconus. However, Ana’s vision continued to deteriorate in in 2018 she lost all her vision. She was referred to BLVNZ in 2017 and has accessed services such as white cane training (as part of orientation and mobility services), also support with leaning to use the speech related apps on her phone.
Aka Ora – which is a support group for Pasifika and Māori clients started almost a year ago.
Members share a connection through their cultures while supporting each other through their own journey with navigating the world as part of the blind and low vision community. Ana is part of the leadership group.
Tiana Collins – Community Liaison for Pasifika based in Wellington.
Tiana is an advocate for better awareness of Blind Low Vision NZ services and linking our Pasifika and Māori communities to access services that support for their independence at part of the blind and low vision community. This includes supporting the support groups, supporting access to services and resources, as well as linking members to wider networks across the communities and spaces they are part of.
